Honkarinne Tupa

Where the timberline meets the sky

Explore Our Rooms

A Lodge at the Edge of the World

Perched among the ancient tunturi fells of Finnish Lapland, Honkarinne Tupa is a hand-built mountain lodge where the boreal forest gives way to the open tundra above. Here, at the timberline — that fragile boundary where trees surrender to sky — silence is not empty but full of wind, light, and the slow turning of seasons.

Our 24 rooms and cabins offer refuge for those seeking the raw beauty of the Arctic north. Whether you come for the dancing Northern Lights of winter, the endless golden light of the midnight sun, or the fiery autumn ruska, Honkarinne Tupa is a place to breathe, to slow down, and to remember what matters.

Built in the Spirit of Timberline Lodge

In 1937, skilled artisans raised Timberline Lodge on the slopes of Mount Hood, Oregon — a monument to handcraft, community, and the belief that great architecture belongs in wild places. Every beam was hand-hewn, every ironwork detail forged by hand, every textile woven by local artists. It was a lodge built not merely for shelter, but as an act of devotion to the mountain.

Honkarinne Tupa was conceived in that same spirit. Our founder, captivated by Timberline Lodge during a journey through the Pacific Northwest, returned to Finland with a vision: to build a lodge that honoured both the Finnish tradition of log construction and the grand craft ethos of its American inspiration. Like Timberline, every timber here was selected by hand from sustainably managed forests. Local artisans carved the details, wove the textiles, and forged the ironwork.

Cinema lovers may recognise the silhouette — yes, that lodge from Stanley Kubrick's "The Shining" was modelled on Timberline Lodge. We promise our hallways are considerably friendlier, though equally atmospheric. The only thing haunting these corridors is the aroma of fresh karjalanpiirakka from the kitchen.

Why Finland?

Finland is consistently ranked as the happiest country on Earth, and it's no coincidence that much of that happiness comes from a deep connection to nature. In Lapland, that connection is absolute.

Land of a Thousand Lakes

Finland has 188,000 lakes and 75% forest cover. The air here is among the cleanest on the planet — the World Health Organization confirmed it.

Four Extraordinary Seasons

From the polar night's blue twilight to the midnight sun's golden glow, from autumn's blazing ruska to spring's crystalline brightness — each visit is a different world.

Everyman's Right

Finland's jokamiehenoikeus grants everyone the right to roam freely in nature, pick berries, fish, and camp. The wilderness belongs to all.

Sauna Culture

With 3.3 million saunas for 5.5 million people, sauna isn't a luxury — it's a way of life. UNESCO recognised Finnish sauna culture as intangible cultural heritage.
